Quick answer

A leaking toilet needs its leak source identified before parts are replaced: water running into the bowl, a dripping supply connection and a leaking waste connector need different repairs. Fox Plumbing serves Springs from Benoni, with owner Evan Pretorius on the tools and the price agreed upfront.

Signs your toilet needs attention

A toilet can leak without leaving a puddle. A persistent trickle into the bowl, hissing after the cistern should have filled, or refilling between uses can indicate a flush seal or inlet valve problem.

Water outside the toilet needs a different check. A supply hose, cistern seal or waste connector may be leaking, and water can travel before it reaches the floor. The location of a puddle alone does not prove which part has failed.

  • Watch for ripples in the bowl when nobody has flushed.
  • Check for drips beneath the cistern and around the supply connection without disturbing the fittings.
  • Note whether floor water appears constantly or only after flushing.
  • Stop using the toilet if it leaks at the waste connection, rocks on its base or has visible cracks.

What affects the cost of a toilet leak repair?

The repair depends on the faulty component, access to it and the condition of the surrounding fittings. Replacing an accessible cistern seal is a different job from removing a pan to reach its waste connector. Concealed cisterns and seized isolation valves can also add work.

Sound ceramic fittings with serviceable mechanisms may only need a targeted repair. Cracked sanitaryware or unavailable replacement parts can make replacement more appropriate. Fox Plumbing agrees the price upfront, and the call-out fee includes the first hour of work. Pensioners get a special rate.

  • The source of the leak and whether more than one component has failed.
  • The toilet model and availability of compatible parts.
  • Access to concealed mechanisms, pipework and connectors.
  • Whether the pan needs removal and refitting or the toilet needs replacement.

Booking a toilet repair in Springs

Fox Plumbing is based in Benoni and serves Springs as part of its East Rand and greater Gauteng service area. When booking, describe whether the water is inside the bowl or on the floor, and whether it appears during filling or flushing. A photo of the toilet and the wet area can help explain the problem.

If water is escaping onto the floor, gently close the toilet's isolation valve if it is accessible and working. Do not force a stiff valve. Avoid flushing if a waste leak is suspected, keep people away from wet flooring and arrange assistance. If the leak cannot be isolated and is causing flooding, seek urgent local help rather than waiting for a scheduled visit.

  • Phone 084 368 1879.
  • Working hours: Monday–Friday, 08:00–17:00.
  • Saturday visits are by appointment.
  • Tell Fox Plumbing if this is the property's only usable toilet.

Why choose Fox Plumbing?

Owner Evan Pretorius is a qualified registered plumber with more than 20 years of experience and works on the tools. He is a member of IOPSA and PIRB, and Fox Plumbing issues Certificates of Compliance (COCs). Every job is insured.

Not every toilet leak needs specialist detection. If the visible fittings do not explain the water loss and a concealed pipe leak is suspected, Fox Plumbing also offers non-invasive detection using harmless tracer gas and a detector. Most leaks investigated with this method are found within the hour, without digging; any repair access is a separate consideration.

How we do the job

  1. 1

    Establish when the leak happens

Check whether water escapes while the cistern fills, while the toilet stands unused or during a flush. This helps distinguish supply, cistern and waste-side faults.

  2. 2

    Inspect the relevant fittings

Examine the inlet valve, flush mechanism, supply connections, cistern seals and waste connector as appropriate. Check for cracks and movement before deciding on a repair.

  3. 3

Explain the repair and agree the price

Identify which parts need attention and discuss repair versus replacement where necessary. Agree the price upfront.

  4. 4

Isolate the water and carry out the work

Shut off the supply and drain the cistern as needed. Repair or replace the faulty components, with additional access only where the job requires it.

  5. 5

    Test filling, flushing and standing

Restore the supply and check that the inlet shuts off, water does not continue running into the bowl, and external connections remain dry through repeated flushes and a standing check.

Common questions

Why does my toilet refill when nobody has used it? +

Water may be escaping from the cistern into the bowl through a worn or poorly seated flush seal. The inlet then opens to replace it. An inlet valve that fails to shut off can also send water through the internal overflow, so both mechanisms need checking.

Does water around the base mean the waste connector has failed? +

Not necessarily. Water from a supply connection or cistern can run down and collect around the base. A leak that appears during flushing makes the waste connection one possible source, but the fittings need inspection before a diagnosis.

Can I fix a leaking toilet by sealing around the base? +

A bead of silicone around the base does not repair a leaking waste connector or cistern seal. It can conceal escaping water. Find and repair the faulty connection before considering any finishing seal.

Do I need a new toilet? +

Not always. If the ceramic parts are sound and compatible components are available, replacing a valve, seal or connector may resolve the problem. Cracks or fittings that cannot be serviced may justify replacement.

When can I arrange a visit in Springs? +
