Quick answer

An electric geyser normally needs replacing when the storage tank leaks or its condition makes further repairs impractical; a faulty element or thermostat alone does not necessarily mean you need a new tank. Fox Plumbing serves Springs from Benoni, with owner Evan Pretorius, a qualified registered plumber with over 20 years’ experience, on the tools and the price agreed upfront.

Signs your geyser may need replacing

Water coming through the ceiling, persistent leaking around the geyser or visible corrosion needs prompt investigation. The source matters: a leaking pipe connection or valve may be repairable, while a leaking storage tank generally needs replacement. No hot water can also be caused by an electrical fault rather than tank failure.

If water is escaping, switch off the geyser’s electricity at the distribution board only if you can reach it safely and the area is dry. Close the water supply if safe to do so, keep clear of wet electrical fittings and stay out from under a sagging ceiling. Do not climb into a flooded roof space.

  • Ask for the leak source to be confirmed before approving a replacement.
  • Repeated faults justify checking the whole installation, not automatically replacing the tank.
  • Continuous discharge from an overflow pipe needs assessment; occasional expansion discharge can be normal.
  • A higher electricity bill alone is not proof that the geyser has failed.

What affects the cost of a replacement?

The scope depends on more than the new geyser. Tank capacity, access, mounting arrangements and the condition of the existing plumbing all affect the work required. A roof-mounted unit behind a small access hatch may need a different removal plan from an accessible cupboard installation.

Fox Plumbing agrees the price upfront. The call-out fee includes the first hour of work, and pensioners receive a special rate. Confirm what the agreed scope includes, particularly any electrical work, compliance corrections and removal of the old unit.

  • Replacement capacity, model and compatibility with the existing system.
  • Access for removing the old cylinder and positioning the new one.
  • Condition of supports, drip tray and discharge pipework.
  • Suitability of pressure-control valves, vacuum breakers and pipe insulation.
  • Electrical defects or changes that require an appropriately registered electrical contractor.

Planning a geyser replacement in Springs

Fox Plumbing is based in Benoni and serves Springs as part of its East Rand and greater Gauteng service area. When booking, give your Springs address, say whether the geyser is in the roof, a cupboard or outside, and explain whether you have a leak or simply no hot water. Photos of the installation and cylinder label can help, but only take them from a safe, accessible position.

Choose capacity around the number of users, bath and shower habits, and peak demand rather than copying the old tank size without checking. A larger cylinder is not automatically a better choice. If you are in a sectional-title property, check access arrangements and any body corporate requirements before work starts.

  • Tell the plumber about restricted access, shared water supplies or planned power interruptions.
  • If claiming through insurance, check the insurer’s approval requirements before authorising replacement.
  • Ask about the expected hot-water interruption; a newly filled tank still needs time to heat.

How we do the job

  1. 1

Confirm the fault and replacement requirements

Assess whether the problem lies in the tank, connected pipework, valves or electrical components. Check household demand, available space and the suitability of the proposed replacement before agreeing the scope and price.

  2. 2

    Isolate and drain safely

Arrange safe electrical isolation, shut off the water supply and drain the cylinder with care around hot water. Plan removal to protect the access route and surrounding finishes.

  3. 3

    Check the supporting installation

Inspect supports, the drip tray, discharge routes, pressure controls and vacuum breakers against applicable requirements, including SANS 10254. Identify necessary corrections rather than assuming every existing fitting can be reused.

  4. 4

    Install, fill and reconnect

Position and secure the new cylinder and complete the plumbing connections. Fill the tank and purge air before electrical power is restored; electrical connection work must be handled by a suitably competent, authorised person.

  5. 5

    Test and hand over

Check connections for leaks, verify operation and inspect safety discharge arrangements. Explain the installation, discuss warranty requirements and provide the relevant plumbing COC, with any separate electrical certification addressed where required.

Common questions

Can a geyser be repaired instead of replaced? +

Often, yes. Faulty elements, thermostats, valves and pipe connections may be repairable. A leaking storage tank generally needs replacement, so identifying the actual fault is the first step.

How long will the replacement take? +

Timing depends on access, the installation’s condition and any plumbing or electrical corrections needed. Ask for an estimate after assessment, and allow additional time for the replacement tank to heat the water.

Do all the valves need replacing? +

Not automatically. Existing valves must be checked for condition, correct pressure rating, compatibility and compliance. Unsuitable or defective components need attention even if they were working with the old geyser.

Will I receive a Certificate of Compliance? +

Fox Plumbing issues plumbing COCs. Confirm the certificate and its scope as part of your replacement booking. A plumbing COC does not replace any electrical certification required for electrical work.

Will a new electric geyser reduce my electricity bill? +

It may reduce standing heat losses if it replaces a poorly insulated unit, but savings are not guaranteed. Hot-water consumption, temperature settings, pipe insulation and leaks also affect electricity use.
