Under Counter Geyser Installations in Benoni

Quick answer

An under counter geyser provides hot water close to a sink, reducing the wait caused by a long pipe run from the main geyser. For a Benoni kitchen, office kitchenette or entertainment area, the right installation depends on water demand, cupboard space, safe discharge routing and a suitable electrical supply. Fox Plumbing assesses these requirements and agrees the price upfront.

When an under counter geyser makes sense

A small geyser beneath the sink can be useful when you regularly run off cold water before the hot water arrives. It can also serve a new sink where extending the existing hot-water pipe would be awkward. The benefit is a shorter pipe run, not an unlimited supply of hot water.

Choose capacity around how you use the sink. Handwashing and rinsing a few cups place different demands on a unit from filling a large washing-up basin repeatedly. A compact storage geyser needs time to reheat once its stored hot water has been used.

  • You wait for hot water at a sink far from the main geyser.
  • A new kitchenette or bar sink needs its own hot-water supply.
  • Your current small geyser leaks, heats poorly or no longer meets demand.
  • A kitchen renovation creates an opportunity to improve pipe routing and service access.

What affects the installation cost

The unit is only one part of the job. Existing pipework, incoming water pressure, mounting requirements and the route for safety discharge all affect the work needed. A cupboard that looks large enough may still need changes to accommodate valves, connections and future maintenance.

Electrical work must also be considered before choosing a model. A nearby socket does not automatically mean the supply is suitable. Fox Plumbing agrees the price upfront; ask what is included for the unit, plumbing materials, compliance documentation and any separately required electrical work.

  • Geyser capacity, design and manufacturer installation requirements.
  • Condition and accessibility of the existing water pipes.
  • Required pressure control, safety valves and discharge pipework.
  • Cupboard alterations or additional support.
  • Electrical supply suitability and any work needed by a qualified electrician.

Planning the space in a Benoni home or workplace

Before booking, clear the cupboard and take photographs showing the sink waste, water connections and surrounding space. Include the intended geyser position and any nearby electrical outlet. These details help explain the layout, although an on-site assessment may still be needed.

Specify a model intended for under-counter installation. Pressurised and open-outlet units have different requirements; some open-outlet models need a compatible vented tap. The plumber must identify the system before selecting fittings. For a Benoni office kitchenette, also consider how many people use the sink during the same break.

  • Allow room to reach controls, valves and connections for servicing.
  • Keep stored cleaning products clear of the unit and pipework.
  • Plan a safe discharge route rather than allowing water into the cupboard.
  • Remember that an electrically heated storage unit cannot reheat during a power interruption.

How we do the job

  1. 1

Assess the sink and hot-water demand

Check how the sink is used, the existing water supply, available cupboard space and access for maintenance. Establish whether a compact storage unit suits the expected demand.

  2. 2

Select the correct unit and installation layout

Match capacity and system type to the application. Plan support, connections, required safety components and discharge routes in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and applicable South African requirements.

  3. 3

Confirm scope, price and electrical requirements

Agree the plumbing scope and price before starting. Identify any electrical changes that must be carried out by a qualified electrician, rather than assuming an existing socket is adequate.

  4. 4

    Fit and connect the geyser

Isolate the water supply, secure the unit as specified and connect the appropriate pipework, valves and discharge arrangements. Keep service points accessible.

  5. 5

    Fill, test and hand over

Fill and purge the unit before switching on its heating element. Check for leaks and correct operation, explain the controls and maintenance requirements, and provide the applicable plumbing compliance documentation.

Common questions

Will hot water arrive instantly? +

A short connection between the geyser and tap usually means a much shorter wait than a long pipe run from the main geyser. There may still be a small amount of cool water in the pipe, and the stored water must already be heated.

Should I choose a 10-litre or 15-litre geyser? +

Choose according to the amount of hot water needed at one time, the unit's recovery performance and the available installation space. Neither size guarantees enough water for repeated large basin fills. Discuss your actual sink use before buying.

Can an under counter geyser use an ordinary plug socket? +

That depends on the model's electrical rating, manufacturer instructions and the existing circuit. Have a qualified electrician confirm the required supply, protection and isolation. Do not use an extension lead as a permanent supply.

Will a separate small geyser reduce my electricity bill? +

Not necessarily. It can reduce the water run off while waiting for a distant supply, but a second storage geyser also uses electricity to maintain its temperature. Overall consumption depends on usage, thermostat settings, insulation and whether it replaces or adds to existing heating.

Does a small geyser still need safety fittings and a COC? +

Small size does not remove installation safety requirements. The required fittings depend on whether the unit is pressurised or open-outlet and on the applicable standards. Fox Plumbing issues COCs; confirm the documentation applicable to your installation when agreeing the scope.
