Quick answer
An under counter geyser supplies hot water close to a sink, reducing the wait caused by a long pipe run from your main geyser. For a Brakpan installation, Fox Plumbing checks your hot-water needs, cupboard space, water supply and safety requirements before agreeing the price upfront.
When an under counter geyser makes sense
A compact geyser can be useful when your kitchen tap takes too long to run hot, or when a new kitchenette has no nearby hot-water connection. It stores a limited amount of heated water near the tap, so it suits smaller, regular tasks rather than sustained high-volume use.
Capacity should match how you use the sink. Handwashing and rinsing mugs place different demands on a unit from repeatedly filling a washing-up basin. Once the stored hot water is used, the geyser needs time to heat its replacement.
- You regularly run cold water down the drain while waiting for hot water.
- You are adding a home bar, office kitchenette or separate handwashing basin.
- Extending the existing hot-water pipe would involve a long or disruptive route.
- Your current compact geyser leaks, heats poorly or no longer meets your needs.
What affects the installation cost
The appliance is only one part of the job. A suitable installation also needs accessible connections, the correct pressure and safety arrangements, and a compliant route for any required discharge pipes. A cupboard that holds the tank may still be too cramped for servicing.
Fox Plumbing agrees the price upfront. The call-out fee includes the first hour of work; confirm the scope of the installation and any separate electrical work before proceeding.
- The geyser's capacity, dimensions and pressure-system type.
- Whether this is a replacement or a completely new hot-water point.
- The condition and position of existing supply pipes and taps.
- Required valves, drainage arrangements and discharge-pipe routes.
- Cupboard alterations, suitable support and access for future maintenance.
- Electrical supply, isolation and any work needed by an electrician.
Planning a practical installation in Brakpan
For a Brakpan kitchen or workplace kitchenette, start with the space beneath the sink. The waste trap, shelves, drawers and existing pipes all compete with the geyser for room. Measure the usable opening as well as the cupboard interior, and leave access to valves and service components.
Choose a unit specifically approved for under counter installation. Pressure-rated and open-outlet systems have different connection requirements; an open-outlet model requires its specified tap arrangement and must not be connected like a pressure-rated geyser. The installation must follow the manufacturer's instructions and applicable South African requirements, including SANS 10254 where relevant.
- Send photographs of the cupboard, sink connections and nearby electrical supply when enquiring.
- Plan pipe routes before fitting new cabinetry or closing walls.
- Do not assume an existing socket makes the electrical supply suitable.
- Keep safety discharge outlets unobstructed; never cap a dripping relief pipe.

How we do the job
- 1
Check demand and available space
Discuss what the sink serves and how often hot water is needed. Measure the cupboard, access opening and clearances around the waste trap and shelving.
- 2
Select the right system
Choose a suitable capacity and an under counter model compatible with the intended tap and water-pressure arrangement. Check support and servicing requirements.
- 3
Confirm the scope and price
Identify plumbing alterations, safety components, discharge routes and electrical requirements. Agree the price and clarify any separately arranged electrical work before installation.
- 4
Fit the geyser and plumbing
Isolate the water supply, position and support the unit as specified, and install the required connections, valves and drainage provisions without blocking maintenance access.
- 5
Fill, connect and test safely
Fill and purge the geyser before energising it. Have a qualified electrician handle any required electrical work, then check for leaks, correct operation and suitable temperature settings.
- 6
Explain operation and hand over
Show you the isolation points, explain reheating limits and maintenance needs, and provide the applicable compliance documentation.
Common questions
Will an under counter geyser give me instant hot water? +
It shortens the pipe run, which usually reduces waiting time. A little cooled water may still remain between the tank and tap, and the unit must already be heated. It does not provide an unlimited supply.
Will it fit beneath my existing sink? +
That depends on the chosen model and the usable cupboard space. Allow for the waste trap, valves, pipework, support and servicing clearances—not just the tank's dimensions.
Do I need an electrician? +
A qualified electrician should assess the supply and carry out any required electrical installation or alterations. Connection and isolation requirements depend on the appliance and applicable electrical rules; an extension lead is not a substitute for a suitable supply.
Will a small geyser reduce my electricity bill? +
Not necessarily. It can reduce water wasted while waiting at the tap, but a separate storage geyser also uses electricity to heat water and replace standing heat losses. The overall effect depends on usage, temperature settings and whether the main geyser remains in use.
Can my existing kitchen mixer stay? +
Possibly, but compatibility must be checked. A pressure-rated unit and an open-outlet unit are not interchangeable; open-outlet models need their specified tap arrangement.
